System requirements
  • MS Windows ( 95, 98, me, NT, 2000, XP, Vista, 7 )
  • An internet connection (Dial-up, DSL, FIOS, Cable)

    Installation

  1. Download and install the free Arachnophilia Version 4 editor. The program must be installed in the C:\Program Files\Arachnophilia folder. This is the default for Windows/95 through XP but, for Vista and Windows/7, you must manually override it.

  2. Although not absolutely required, it is strongly suggested you install the latest version of Mozilla's Firefox browser. There is a very usefull "firebug" add-on for it and there are other nice features to aid in web develpment.

  3. Create a \btikvah\website folder in the root directory on any local hard drive (not on your desktop nor in My Documents). Make a shortcut to this folder on your desktop or anywhere that's convenient. There is a "favicon.ico" file of a Jewish Star that's included in the starter files that you can as an icon for it.

  4. Unzip the starter files (which the webmaster will send to you) into that folder. The starter files consist of the necessary components of the websharing system in addition to all the graphics and scripts which allow your locally edited pages to operate as if they were on the server.

  5. Make a Shortcut to the WEBEDIT.BAT on your desktop and change the ICON, if you prefer. Do the same for WEBVIEW.BAT if you prefer. (You should rename the shortcuts as WebEDIT and WebVIEW to make them look nicer.)

If you use Firefox, you won't need WebVIEW. Just go to about:config and change the view_source.editor.path to "C:\Program Files\Arachnophilia\arach.exe" and set view_source.editor.external to "true". You can then browse to any page on the website and simply click the "View" menu and select "Page Source". Save the file in the \btikvah\website folder and you will be able to render it locally.

  6. With a plain text editor, create a 1 line text file named "name.tag" (not name.tag.txt) and save it in the \btikvah\website folder with the starter files. This file uniquely identifies your computer to the system. Code your name, email address, and phone number, and if you intend to install WEBEDIT on an additional computer, put something to identify the machine as well. This file becomes associated with all HTML documents that you work on and serves to identify the current or last owner of the page.

  7. Connect to the internet (i.e. dialup) and double-click the WEBEDIT icon. In the pop-up box, type the word SETUP and hit enter. If Arachnophilia was installed in the proper folder, the toolbars for it will be generated. If you get an error (in Vista or Win 7) indicating insufficient authority, you need to manually copy the toolbar file as follows: Copy the file "WEBSHARE.tbd" from the "\btikvah\website" folder to the "C:\Program Files\Arachnophilia\toolbars" folder.

  8. Add WEBSAVE to your right mouse button's "Send To" menu:
    Windows 98 & XP:
Windows Vista & 7: Create a new SEND TO shortcut:
From the \btikvah\website folder, drag the WEBSAVE.BAT file with the RIGHT mouse button and select "Create Shortcut" when you release the button. Rename the shortcut to "WebSAVE" and change the icon to something that looks like an upload function, such as a big green arrow.

Note: The files to be uploaded must reside in the local \btikvah\website folder.
