Usher's Guidelines & Responsibilities

Greet everyone with a smile and "Shabbat Shalom" or "Gut Shabbos."
Do not open the sanctuary door unnecessarily.
Allow people to enter the Sanctuary except at the following times:
  • during the Shacharit Silent Amidah (except when the Cantor hums a nigun before the Repetition of the Amidah.)
  • during the Repetition of the first page of the Shacharit Amidah and Kedushah (pp. 115b and 116)
  • when the ark is open
  • while a Bar/Bat Mitzvah is chanting the Haftorah or giving the speech or dvar torah
  • during the entire Musaf Amidah
  • People may enter during the Torah Procession but, must remain near the door and refrain from blocking the aisle until the Torah is returned to the bima.
Direct all men and boys (other than toddlers) to please wear a kippah if they are not already doing so.
If a man about to enter the sanctuary is not already wearing or carrying a tallit, please politely but firmly remind him that it is our custom for all Jewish men to wear a tallit in the sanctuary and either hand one to him or direct him toward the tallit rack. (Offer assistance to any who may need it.)
In the unusual event that someone refuses but, you believe it is likely that he is Jewish, politely but, firmly, repeat the statement regarding our custom. If he refuses again, show an usher or Ritual Committee member the person after he is in Sanctuary.

Assist persons in need of accessible seating to find an appropriate place in the Sanctuary.
Advise people of the page number as they enter the Sanctuary.
Remind people in the lobby to keep conversations very quiet and away from the Sanctuary doors.
Remind chidren in the lobby to refrain from running, roughhousing, etc., if necessary.
