As Jews, we strive to observe all of the commandments in the Torah. The final mitzvah, number 613, is to write a Torah scroll. While most of us can never do this individually, Maimonides taught us that each of us can fulfill this mitzvah by writing a single letter or by commissioning someone to write a Torah scroll on our behalf.

This year, B'nai Tikvah is embarking on a journey of a lifetime with the Mitzvah 613 project. We are writing a new Torah scroll that we will read each week in our sanctuary. Our new Torah scroll will be used by us, our children, and grandchildren, for years to come. We will experience something that is not likely to come along again in our lifetime.

As we come together as a community, it will be as if we are personally fulfilling the mitzvah. We will witness and participate in the writing of our new Torah scroll by our sofer (scribe) Zerach Greenfield. Each of us will have the opportunity to share a sensory connection to the shape of the letters, the texture of the parchment, and the concentration of the scribe, as he uses his quill to write the words that G-d imparted to Moses. As we inscribe each letter, one by one, we will bind our community together as never before.

Everyone in our community, from preschoolers to grandparents, can participate. A donation toward the writing of a letter, a passage, a parasha or the other opportunities available with our new Torah scroll, will make you and your family part of its creation and its ongoing legacy for future generations of the B'nai Tikvah community.

The Mitzvah 613 project will also enable B'nai Tikvah to raise funds to improve our sanctuary and to secure the future of our synagogue.
